Moving Companies: How To Prepare for a Below-Freezing Move

If you’re from an area with pretty harsh winters, you may be a bit more accustomed to the adaptation required at the season change. However, not everyone is used to this type of weather, and attention to detail is important. Besides bundling up in a winter coat and insulated gloves, here are some of the most important factors of moving in freezing weather:

Call ahead

If snow is on the forecast, call the day before and be sure the individuals you are moving have something arranged to remove the snow from their driveway/parking area. As the moving company, it is not your job to deal with plowing or shoveling; however, it is your job to be expert communicators. If they do not have this dealt with, remind them (politely) to have that factor figured out, because if not, you are able to charge them a waiting fee if your truck has to sit somewhere before it can get in to the driveway.

Leave the liquids

DON’T pack any liquids. Chemistry lesson 101: when liquid freezes, it expands. This can lead to broken containers and make a sharp and dangerous mess. The individuals you are moving should have already either drained or discarded any liquid. If they have forgotten to do so, kindly remind them and pack up the empty containers.

In-home protection

Any reputable moving company will be well equipped with materials to protect a home from weather-related damage. This includes extra cardboard for packaging items and carpet-runners to save flooring. If in any case something weather-related damages the inside of the property (such as slush-stained carpeting) it is absolutely the moving company’s responsibility to fix it.


When it comes to the transit-portion of the move, there are two main factors to be proactive in preparing: the truck, and the driver.

Vehicle maintenance is an absolute necessity, especially in harsh weather conditions. Have routine maintenance checks scheduled before each move, and have tires checked regularly. Remain mindful of the fluid you are using and what is/is not compatible with the complex diesel engine. Also, be sure your driver knows when you need to plug in the block to ensure it doesn’t freeze.

Each driver needs to go through weather related vehicle operating training. If roads get slippery, you want to be sure whoever is driving the truck is beyond prepared to deal with the road conditions.


Again, be sure that the people you are moving called ahead to plan any plowing or salting needed in the unloading area (it also doesn’t hurt to call and remind them of this as well).  When moving items inside, be mindful again of having the proper protective materials to make sure their home is not damaged. This is especially important since they are moving in, and odds are the last thing they want to deal with is replacing ruined carpet when they are trying to settle in to a new home.

Once you have things moved in, do not plug in any major large appliances. These appliances need time to adapt back to room temperature before being plugged back in due to any freezing of pipes or cords. Examples of these items include washing machines, televisions, gas and electric dryers, waterbeds, and even grandfather clocks. Plugging them in before they are given adequate time (usually 12-24 hours) to thaw, can lead to permanent damage. Remind your clients of this in case they are unaware of this little fact (another great demonstration of customer service).


With any great business deal comes a follow-up call. The purpose of following up with a customer is to find out the degree of satisfaction they had in their experience with your company. Be sure to thank them for using your services, and provide your willingness to aid in any further questions they may have about any ‘next steps’ in the moving process.

Come rain or shine or SNOW, you should be prepared for anything and everything Mother Nature may throw your way. Very few people absolutely love the cold, so ensuring you are prepared and ready for the weather is just another essential in delivering incredible customer service.
